A Dream Turned Into a Nightmare: Catherine’s Story of Deception and Survival

Catherine’s story is a powerful reminder to remain vigilant and never trust offers that seem too good to be true.
After convincing Catherine that she had secured an opportunity for her to travel abroad, Linda Weah instructed her parents to send money for processing fees. Once the payments were made, Linda told Catherine to travel to Nigeria on November 15, claiming she had been scheduled for a visa interview.
Filled with hope for a brighter future, Catherine borrowed and spent US$200 on transportation from Ganta to Nigeria, enduring a difficult three-day journey.
But the moment she arrived, her dream began to unravel.
The phone numbers Linda had provided were switched off, leaving Catherine stranded and frightened in a foreign country. Hours later, a woman introduced as Linda’s sister, Esther, arrived, demanded another US$50 for transportation, and took Catherine to a hotel.
Four days later, Linda finally appeared, claiming she had just arrived from Canada. She later moved Catherine into an old apartment, assuring her it was only temporary while her travel documents were being finalized.
Days turned into weeks, yet there was no visa interview, no travel documents, and no sign of the future she had been promised.
Then came the devastating truth.
Linda confessed that Catherine had never been brought to Nigeria for any visa interview. Instead, she had been recruited to join QNET and was expected to lure other unsuspecting people into the scheme.
When Catherine refused to participate, her phone was confiscated, cutting off all communication with her family. Isolated, frightened, and trapped in a foreign country, she endured more than a month without any way to seek help.
Her ordeal finally came to light when two other victims helped expose what was happening. Back in Liberia, Catherine’s mother had already reported her disappearance to the police, and the growing pressure eventually led to Catherine’s rescue and safe return home.
Today, Catherine shares her experience not for sympathy, but to protect others from suffering the same fate.
“This is my story,” she says. “I hope no one else falls victim to the same deception.”
Her story is a warning to every young Liberian and every family: verify every overseas opportunity through official channels, be cautious of individuals demanding money for travel or jobs, and never allow desperation to cloud your judgment. Human traffickers and scammers often disguise themselves as trusted friends, recruiters, or successful businesspeople. Awareness can save lives.
