Liberia Anti-Trafficking and Scam Victim Support Initiative Announces Prosecution of Major Human Trafficking Case

Monrovia, Liberia | July 16, 2026 – The Liberia Anti-Trafficking and Scam Victim Support Initiative (LASVSI), through its Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Department, announces that a major human trafficking case is being brought before the appropriate court in Liberia today.

The case involves several Sierra Leonean nationals who were allegedly recruited and transported to Liberia under false promises of securing travel opportunities to Canada and Europe. Initial investigations indicate that the victims were deceived through fraudulent recruitment schemes orchestrated by suspected traffickers, underscoring the growing threat posed by transnational human trafficking networks across West Africa.

LASVSI has been working closely with relevant government institutions, law enforcement agencies, and judicial authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and the successful prosecution of those responsible. The organization remains committed to supporting the victims throughout the judicial process while advocating for justice and accountability.

“This case serves as a reminder that human trafficking is a transnational crime that requires a coordinated national, regional, and international response. No individual should become a victim of exploitation through false promises of employment, education, or migration opportunities,” the institution stated.

The organization notes with concern the increasing number of trafficking cases involving vulnerable Africans who are misled by criminal networks offering fake migration opportunities to Europe, North America, and other destinations. These criminal activities not only violate fundamental human rights but also threaten regional security and sustainable development.

LASVSI calls upon the Government of Liberia, the Government of Sierra Leone, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), the United Nations, international development partners, civil society organizations, and all well-meaning individuals to strengthen collaboration in combating human trafficking. Increased investment in prevention, victim protection, prosecution, public awareness, and cross-border cooperation is essential to dismantling trafficking networks and protecting vulnerable communities.
