Organization Warns Traffickers Are Opening Offices in Nigeria to Target More Liberians

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — The Liberia Anti-Trafficking and Scam Victims Support Initiative [LATSVSI] is calling on the Government of Liberia and partners to launch an urgent nationwide public awareness campaign following reports that hundreds of Liberians have been identified as victims of trafficking and scam networks in Nigeria.

According to Nigeria’s Immigration Commissioner, authorities in Nigeria are currently working with LATSVSI and other stakeholders to facilitate the safe return of Liberians who wish to come home. The process of arresting and prosecuting suspected perpetrators is also ongoing.

TRAFFICKERS STILL ACTIVE
LATSVSI says it continues to receive credible reports that individuals behind these schemes are still deceiving Liberians with false job offers, fake travel opportunities, and misleading business promises.

“Some of these perpetrators are reportedly opening offices in different states across Nigeria to expand their operations and target more Liberians,” said Zokerseh B. Saye, Executive Director of LATSVSI. “If we do not act now with massive public education, more families will lose money, and more young people will be trapped.”

CALL FOR NATIONAL ACTION
The organization is appealing to:
Government of Liberia – Lead a coordinated national campaign
International Partners & CSOs – Provide technical and funding support
Media & Community Leaders – Help spread verified information
Citizens – Verify all job, travel, and business offers before committing

LATSVSI stresses that sustained public education, stronger cross-border cooperation, timely investigations, and victim support are critical to stopping further exploitation.

PUBLIC ADVISORY
LATSVSI is urging all Liberians and their families to:
“VERIFY BEFORE YOU TRAVEL.”
Check the legitimacy of recruiters, companies, and travel documents with the Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Liberia Immigration Service before making any commitment.

“Prevention is cheaper than rescue. We must protect our people before they become victims,” Saye added.

LATSVSI reaffirms its commitment to working with government, law enforcement, and international partners to protect vulnerable Liberians, support victims, and ensure perpetrators are held accountable.
